Language course

Many Portuguese speak English, but sometimes it’s good to know some simple phrases, then you get a different treatment and a smiling answer in return. It also feels good to be able to ask a question or order food at the restaurant instead of pulling out Google Translate.

I offer two variants of my courses, on site in a group (just outside Lagos) or remotely. You learn to express yourself and understand sentences. After the basic course, you can recognise common words and simple phrases. You can read common names and simple sentences. You can more easily converse with others. You can cope with common situations in shops, restaurants, banks and other public establishments.

My course is based on Listen – Imitate – Learn, practice a little bit at a time, repeat until you know most of the words. You will be happy about your success and want to learn even more – it keeps the study interesting and alive. 15 minutes of practice per day gives a good base of the foreign language.

Who am I?

I first moved to Portugal (Portimão) with my family in 1970 and went to Portuguese school with my sister. The revolution came in 1974 and a year later we had to move back to Sweden. Mum and dad came back to Portugal after 2 years when everything had calmed down, a few years later I also moved here again (this time to Guia outside Albufeira).

After a couple of years I married a Portuguese and had a daughter. She grew up here and went to Portuguese school with many friends, Portuguese being her first language.

I ran a printing company (in Boliqueime) for a number of years until I started doing web design. My daughter and I went to Brazil for two years and then back to Sweden. In 2016 I landed in Portugal again and this time in Lagos. At the same time, many Swedes moved here, so I decided to start my language lessons.

As I have lived here for so many years and both worked and spent time with the local people, I also share with you about the local culture that can be useful to know.

I was just given a title by one of my students – PBC – Personal Brain Coach as a research shows that language learning is very useful for training our brains. So what are you waiting for?

Elisabet Willkrans, Lagos, Portugal

“I have been studying Portuguese with Annika for a few years. Annika is pedagogic and structured. As she understands the Portuguese culture, you learn more than just the language. I always look forward to the lessons.”

Lars Keyser, Lagos, Portugal

“Annika has succeeded in the difficult task of making her teaching interesting, fun and effective!”

Birgitta Erkas Westerberg, Lagos, Portugal

“If you want to learn Portuguese, I can really recommend Annika’s courses. She is good at adapting groups to the participants’ skills. We practice a lot of pronunciation by imitating, Annika has amazing patience. There is also a lot of good material to listen to and practice at home. Besides, it’s very nice!”

Ingela Hagstedt-Nygren, Lagos, Portugal

“It is now the seventh semester I am studying Portuguese with Annika. Practical Portuguese to use in everyday life, when traveling and in all imaginable situations. Small groups that worked well online even during lockdown. Especially well suited for us immigrants/”Swedish-Portuguese”. A bit of culture and society creeps in and also grammar gradually. With a number of languages in her luggage, I would like to say that Annika’s courses are outstanding, compared to traditional ones. Highly recommended – but don’t forget to do your homework! “

Lotta och Anders, Lagos, Portugal

“After several years of regular, fun and educational language lessons with Annika, we can appreciate Portugal’s wonderful people, culture and food even more.”

Krister and Annica, Lagos, Portugal

“Although many Portuguese are good at and happy to speak English, you often end up in situations when it is good to understand and be able to say a few sentences in Portuguese. We have experienced that in many authorities and in some businesses it is difficult to get by with English. In Annika Feder’s lessons, we have been able to practice common situations that are faced in everyday life as residents in Portugal, e.g. shopping at the market, going to the clothes store or the bank. We have learned many useful phrases and words. But in order to be understood and understand, it is not possible to avoid Portuguese’s sometimes complicated grammar, with many conjugations of verbs. In practical exercises, we often have to invent sentences ourselves that Annika and the other group participants must interpret and understand. After six semesters, we are now starting to get a feel for the Portuguese language and can build on it on our own in everyday life by learning new words.”

Lena Nahlbom-Jonsson, Lagos, Portugal

“To those of you who are thinking about studying Portuguese, stop thinking and do it. You will have many more great experiences from another, more exciting perspective in this fantastic country. I was lucky enough to join one of Annika Feder’s beginner Portuguese courses in 2019 and still find learning more to be one of the highlights of the week. What I appreciate most about Annika’s courses are:

* focus on current useful phrases in everyday situations, e.g. in the shop/restaurant/post office, etc

* self-produced study material with varied exercises that stimulate self-study

* fantastic well-organized website where the study material is available so I can study/do homework when it suits me

* in these Corona times, our study group has also had teaching via the internet. It worked as well as it could.

* last but not least, Annika has a unique ability to adapt the study pace/level of difficulty to each individual’s needs so that everyone gets the most out of her courses. I can warmly recommend Annika Feder’s courses, which teach you this beautiful language in the best and funnest way.”

Kerstin and Sven Törnberg, Lagos, Portugal

“Annika has really got us interested in learning Portuguese in a fun and educational way. After just one semester, we feel that we have gained knowledge that allows us to dare to use what we have learned in everyday life. We will certainly continue in the coming semesters. It gives results in the short term when you also have self-study between lessons. We can warmly recommend Annika’s courses.”

Lars and Marianne Rönnbäck, Lagos, Portugal

“For four semesters we have learned Portuguese with Annika Wennergren-Feder as teacher. Lessons once a week and homework every time. Every lesson has been rewarding, developing and enjoyable. Step by step we have learned words, expressions, everyday conversation and some grammar.

However, the focus has not been on grammar but on understanding and being able to express oneself. But some grammar is of course required, so we have worked with useful verbs (regular/irregular/present/imperfect and future), as well as some other things you need (prepositions/counting words/adjectives/adverbs etc.)

Each lesson you get new written work material with texts, sentences and tasks. Audio files are available on Annika’s website to practice comprehension and pronunciation.

In total, we have had 66 lessons, of which a number were online due to the lock-down, when we could not meet physically. We have preferred the lessons at Annika’s home, but distance lessons via the internet have also worked well.

We are now finally beginning to feel that we have mastered the language to a certain level. We understand and can express ourselves, but the hardest part is still keeping up when people talk fast.

It has been fun and educational and we are now starting our fifth term with the hope of greater challenges to converse in Portuguese.

All in all, we are happy to recommend Annika to anyone who wants to learn Portuguese.”

Christina Asklöf, Lagos, Portugal

“I have been participating in a group of 5 participants for 2 years. I think I learn a lot that is good to use in everyday life. Dare to speak, I think I write and read well. Still having trouble understanding what is being said. Very good layout of the course. Fantastic practice tasks. Can highly recommend Annika’s courses, which are available at several levels.”

Margareta Einarsson, Lagos, Portugal

“After living in Portugal for four years, I felt that I needed to learn more Portuguese. And with Annika’s help, my vocabulary has grown enormously. Today, I can have simpler conversations with Portuguese, manage when visiting restaurants, in shops, at the gas station, in the hospital, etc. Her lessons have been extremely valuable for me personally and for my professional role. I am grateful and very satisfied with the lessons I received from Annika.”
